OPG maintaining essential work to continue powering province through pandemic

Ontario Power Generation’s roughly 350 employees in Niagara are doing “what we can” to maximize physical distancing and ensure good hygiene practices while making sure essential work is being done to keep units running reliably and safely during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The Beck generating facility (in Niagara Falls) has the ability to provide three million homes with power,” said Jessica Polak, vice-president of operations for OPG’s south-central region, which includes Niagara.

“Obviously, it’s not all homes that we are supplying power to, it’s also hospitals and other essential businesses during this time. It’s definitely high on our radar to make sure that we’re doing our part in ensuring safe, reliable power for those facilities … to stay functioning and basically be able to get us through this pandemic the best way we can.”

OPG has donated 500,000 surgical masks, 75,000 N95 masks and 17,500 Tyvek suits (protective gear against a variety of hazards) to the province to address the pressing need for personal protective equipment for front-line health-care workers.
