The federal government announced new business relief measures today in response to the collapse in Canada-U.S. trade negotiations.
“Government is now moving at the speed of business to address the current trade negotiation collapse,” says our President and CEO Candace Laing in a new statement. “If the government did not prioritize speed, some businesses would not still be there by the time support rolls out.”
These measures should give businesses some much-needed breathing room. But immediate relief is only part of the response. We also need to focus on the longer-term pivot: helping businesses diversify their trading partners, sell more within Canada and equip their workers for the modern economy.
