Hello Fort Erie Business Owner/Operator,
On Monday, April 8, 2024, Fort Erie will experience a once-in-a-lifetime Total Solar Eclipse. A partial solar eclipse will begin at 2:04 p.m., with total coverage (totality) at 3:20 p.m., finally revealing the entire sun again around 4:32 p.m.
What is a Total Solar Eclipse?
A Total Solar Eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly between the Earth and the Sun, completely covering the Sun and casting a shadow on Earth. In this alignment, the Moon’s apparent diameter is large enough to block the entire Sun, temporarily turning day into night for observers in the path of the Moon’s shadow. The sun’s corona will be visible in Fort Erie for approximately 3 minutes 46 seconds. If there are overcast skies on the day of the eclipse, some viewing may be blocked.
What is the Significance of the Total Solar Eclipse with Fort Erie?
Fort Erie is uniquely positioned along the “path of totality” and will experience the longest duration (the Moon will cover the Sun for 3 minutes and 46 seconds) seen of this incredible astronomical phenomenon anywhere in Canada because it is the farthest southwest location along the path of totality. It is anticipated that Fort Erie and the entire Niagara Region will see increased visitors to experience this rare event.
Does this create an opportunity for my business?
It is anticipated that Fort Erie and the entire Niagara Region will see an influx of visitors to experience this rare event. On the day of the event, there could also be increased traffic, resulting in congestion that may temporarily impact your business operations. The Town has been meeting to prepare. To keep businesses and residents informed, a web page has been designed, which includes designated viewing areas, safety tips for safe solar eclipse viewing and distribution of solar glasses, road closures and potential events to enjoy.
